Why skincare on flights is a big deal. Experts break it down for you. By Krishika Bhatia
Heading to your dream destination? Trust me, I know the struggle of long-haul flights dulling your sparkle! But don't worry, we've discovered the best in-flight skincare routine to ensure you land looking as fresh and fabulous as you feel. Whether you're hopping between cities or crossing borders, these skincare essentials have become my go-to that protects me against the harsh effects of cabin air, high altitude, and UV exposure.
Is an In-flight Skincare Routine Necessary?
We spoke to experts to help answer this question, “An in-flight skincare routine is essential however, it doesn’t have to be as tedious as the one at home,” says Dr Jaya Pathak, Chief of Dermatology and Operations at Potenza Wellness.“The skincare routine should focus on hydration and protection. The emphasis should be on lightweight and hydrating products to combat the dry air,” adds Dr Niti Gaur, MD, Board Certified Dermatologist Founder of Citrine Clinic. These products penetrate deeply to replenish your skin's moisture, helping you stay hydrated and fresh. Don't forget to slap on some sunscreen with a high SPF to shield against UV rays. But before you do that, ditch the makeup to avoid clogging up your pores.
Must-Haves for Your In-Flight Glow-Up
1. Cleanse with Care
Before takeoff, make sure to include a non-stripping cleansing balm in your prep routine. Flying can be rough on your skin, and slathering on makeup doesn't exactly help. Pick a balm that wipes away makeup without robbing your skin of its natural moisture. Follow up with a gentle face wash to start your journey with a fresh canvas.

2. Hydration Station
Once in the air, give your skin a hydration boost with a nourishing serum. Look for products packed with hyaluronic acid to inject that moisture deep into your skin. Ingredients like shea butter and squalane work wonders to lock in moisture and keep dryness away.

3. Lock It in with Moisture
After your hydrating serum, seal the deal with a non-comedogenic moisturizer. “Use one with hydrating and barrier protecting ingredients” explains Dr Jaya. This ensures your skin stays plump and hydrated throughout the flight, no matter how long the journey.

4. Mask On, Stress Off
Sheet masks are like mini spa sessions for your face, and they're super travel-friendly. “For longer flights, a hydrating sheet mask can provide an extra boost of moisture.” adds Dr Niti. Toss one in your carry-on for an easy-peasy pick-me-up mid-flight. Additionally, you can also use sleeping lip masks for a hydration boost and pick from yummy flavours like vanilla, berry and gummy bear.

5. Shield Up with Sunscreen
“Even though you are indoors, UV rays can still penetrate through airplane windows” says Dr Niti. So, flying means more exposure to those UV rays. Protect your precious skin with a sunscreen boasting a high SPF and PA rating. Slap it on as the final step in your in-flight skincare routine, and don't forget to reapply every couple of hours. Re-application is easier if you opt for a sunscreen stick or a hydrating SPF mist.
Master this in-flight skincare routine, and you'll touch down with a radiant, well-rested glow.
